Written by JMC47 on Feb. Playing a game in Dolphin instead of the GameCube or Wii can make a huge difference in visual quality.
With HD output, Dolphin can bring the best out of many stunning titles. But beyond that, an assortment of crazy enhancements, including 3D output, free camera, widescreen hacks, a higher clocked emulated CPU and much more, can absolutely transform titles into new experiences even for veterans after many playthroughs. Super Mario Sunshine is a beautiful GameCube platformer released in While an emulator can't do much on its own to increase the framerate of a game, one of our users, ehw, believed that it would be possible to modify the game to run at a higher framerate.
Firstly, the vbeam speedhack has to be turned on in order to modify the timings of the emulator. It's possible that simply flipping Dolphin's framelimit to run at FPS would be fine, but the emulator stretches audio at non-standard framerates, blocking this possiblity for now.
Secondly, a small game patch is applied. This actually makes the gameplay run half speed at 30 FPS. Thirdly, Dolphin's audio timings are modified to run at half speed; so the game also sounds normal at double speed. Lastly, on some versions of the hack, the level select cheat is required to get into certain stages.
This is the key ingredient that makes it all work. For a more technical, the creator wrote an explanation on the inner workings of the process and final patch.Super Mario Sunshine Retrospective
Depending on the value of the patch, you can get a near perfect 60 FPS hack where the game is completable, or an even smoother variant that breaks certain stage portals. There is also a FPS hack for those with high framerate monitors and T. Super Mario Sunshine is an absolute joy to play at 60 FPS, and fans of the game should truly enjoy the work put forth. On another note, ehw also came up with more hacks for Pikmin 2 and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy.
Pikmin 2 is completely playable with just the patch, but some cutscenes seem to play at double speed. This makes the game very difficult to run at 60 FPS on all but the most powerful computers. Considering that it was a 15 - 20FPS game on console, the difference here is even greater than the other hacks. Pikmin 2 60 FPS. Pikmin 1 is even stranger; it requires no game-side patch. Simply enable the vbeam speedhack and tell Dolphin's audio output to make it run at 60 FPS without side effects!
This is mostly done by using the settings for their slow motion modes, and unfortunately can't be done in other games. With these four games brought up to 60 FPS, it can only make people wonder if other titles could be brought to 60 FPS in a similar way. Think about all of the seminal titles with huge, sprawling worlds that could be made more beautiful with an even better framerate.
Anyone can experiment, dig around and try things as long as they have the game. Do note that reverse engineering chops may be needed for some games more than others. In some games it is very easy to find these codes, because they have a variable frame rate. Most games that run below 60fps first poll the NTSC frame rate 60fps then divide it by 2 or 3 to get the desired final frame rate.
Doing this enough will give you the memory positions of a couple of places where the code could go. Then you can write an Action Replay code to force the memory value to 1 for a solid frame rate of 60fps. There are other games that use a similar principle, but instead use floating point values. Forcing the value to 1. Some games have side effects due to lazy programming, and have issues when the frame rate is changed.
It requires a lot of extra work to fix that! One idea I had was to force the easier to find NTSC frame rate in Super Mario Sunshine to a higher value, but that caused crash on initialization, so that was a failure.
Anyway, someday I think it would be worth it to figure out a way to bruteforce these codes. A bruteforcer like this would be somewhat tricky. How do you detect when the frame rate has changed? Also, do you attempt to force the memory locations, searching for 60, 30, 2 and floating point versions of these numbers? Is it better to go through the actual functions are try and force values there? More research is needed…. Like Like.

Step through the recorded video frame by frame with VirtualDub to see if each frame contains animation or if there are duplicate frames.
At least it doesn't hold 60 FPS, sometimes it gets down to like Jump to. Who is online Users browsing this forum: No registered users.Login Register. Thread Rating: 0 Vote s - 0 Average 1 2 3 4 5. Thread Modes. Hello guys, I'm currently having a problem running "Super Mario Galaxy 2" at a steady 60 frames per second. I checked the compatibility for the game and it's playable. I was given a new gaming pc by my family as a christmas gift.
Before I played SMG2 for the first time on Dolphin, I assumed that it should run at a steady 60 fps, because of the specs of my laptop. However I was wrong. When it boots up and goes into the wii remote pictures, it's running at 60 fps, but as soon as it goes into the intro, the game goes and maintains a solid 30 fps.
I tried playing around with the settings for about a week now and I still haven't had any luck. I was wondering if anybody can help me with my issue. Here are my specs: Dolphin 5. Hi, Do you have the same problem on other games? I've just tried the PAL version and it's running at constant 60fps. What happened if you disable verical synch? DJBarry Don't even bother Before I changed any settings I did test out other games, and they all run at 30 fps. After enabling those settings, as soon as the game boots up it doesn't go near 60 fps, but rather maintains 30 fps.
Also when you said "verical synch", I assumed you were talking about V-Sync. I already had that setting turned off. Make sure your CPU is running full speed, according to your opening post it says 2.
Make sure your power settings in Windows are set to High performance 4. Make sure your power settings in the nVidia control panel are set to Prefer maximum performance 5. If you still have speed issues: please post all your settings for Dolphin, If the problem is solved starting from there take small steps in improving the graphics quality eg.
Okay so now I replaced Dolphin 5. After altering all of my settings I managed to get and maintain 60 fps. The only thing I got to fix is my processor. I downloaded Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and ran a few benchmark tests, and my maximum processor frequency was at 3.
You mentioned that the k has a baseclock of 4.
Any other configuration in order to make it better? Other than that, thank you for helping me resolve my issues so that I can now play games at 60 fps. Is your cooling sufficient? BTW, is this a laptop? Because the i7 HQ it is a mobile variant has a baseclock of 2. If you could cool it even more maybe a laptop cooling pad, they cost like 25 dollar you might be able to get up to 3. View a Printable Version Subscribe to this thread.

If not, you're running fullspeed. And your computer is very likely fast enough, by far.
Edit Reason: adding more info 5. The Last Story is too demanding for the Wii and can't be run full speed all the time on the real Wii. That's why the game dev have to cut down here and there. These is 60FPS hack.
All you need is AR code of that game action replay codes. Tried this, in both games vexx, crash bandicoot TWOC is goes up to 60 but then immidiatly goes back to 30 and starts going between the 2 again using the lowest possible setting for dolphin then followed by a FIFO is overflown by GatherPipe, CPU thread is too fast!

Saw that yesterday, some games definitely see a huge improvement with a higher FPS, and Sunshine looks like it plays a hell of a lot better from the video alone. Gonna give this a try with a few other games. Joined: May 5, Messages: 49 Country:.

Looks like there might be some interesting hacking going on there, if I did not feel so meh about 60fps as a concept in games, much less gamecube and wii games, then I might have to try my hand at it.
